Mapuwa Gorilla Family
Mapuwa Gorilla Family: Virunga national park is one of the places where tourists can trek the endangered mountain gorillas, the park covers an area of about 7,800 kilometers squared. The park has also been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
The Mapuwa mountain gorilla family is found in Jomba area of Virunga national park near the Congo-Rwandan border. The group is dominated by a renowned silverback Mapuwa known of protecting his family even during hard times.
Mapuwa was born to the Rugendo family but left his family to form his own in 1998 taking along two females. Mapuwa is fond of fighting other silverbacks to snatch members from their groups to add into his family. The other gorilla groups Congo can be seen below:
Bageni gorilla family
This group is dominated by a silverback known as Bageni, its one of the largest gorilla groups in Virunga national park.
Lulengo gorilla family
The Lulengo gorilla family was formerly known as Masekura gorilla group, the name of the group changed to Lulengo in honor of the Virunga national park technician who died in a land mine.
Kabirizi gorilla family
The Kabirizi mountain gorilla family is dominated by the silverback Kabirizi, the name Kabirizi was given in honor of an ICCN director who died in a traffic accident in the late 90s.
Rugendo gorilla family
The Rugendo gorilla family was earlier on dominated by the famous silverback Rugendo but the group split with Humba taking some members form create his own family. The dominating silverback of the group now is Bukima.
Nyakamwe gorilla group
The Nyakamwe gorilla group is one of the newest gorilla groups in Virunga national park though the group is likely to split because of power struggles.
Munyaga gorilla family
The Munyaga gorilla group is one of the smallest gorilla groups in Congo though one of the groups gifted with twins, the dominating silverback of the group is known as Gasore.
Humba gorilla family
Humba gorilla family was formed in 1908 when Humba broke off from his father to form his own family; Humba is also a brother to Senkwenkwe who was fired by un known gun men.
