When people learn about the endangered mountain gorillas the quick question that comes to their mind is where they can be found and the rest of the procedure. This is not hard to know and choose which place you will choose to tract the gorillas. The mountain gorillas are found in just three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, DRC.
Gorillas in Rwanda can only be tracked at Volcanoes national park which is part of the large Virunga conservation area. Access begins in the lively town of Musanze, situated at the base of the entrance of the park. Musanze has long been the base point for gorilla visits and entertains a stunning backdrop of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Mikeno, Sabyinyo, Mgahinga and Muhabura volcanoes.
Musanze is a 90-minute drive from Rwandas capital city, Kigali. One can get to Musanze from Kigali either by private vehicle or by public taxi minibus. If you intend to make a gorilla visit, you will need to organise your own transport from Musanze town to the park boundaries, where you will continue your trip on foot. Vehicles can be hired for this purpose in Musanze town. Musanze is also only a 45-minute drive away from Gisenyi and the stunning Lake Kivu.
That all being said, Rwanda is the best place for those that look for a laid back safari and don’t need to drive long distances but for those that look for adventure and at a lower cost, Uganda is the best place for them because the cost of just a gorilla permit in Rwanda can get you a 3 days gorilla experience in Uganda.
Since Rwanda increased its gorilla permit fees to $1500 each, the country then became a luxury gorilla trekking point. Just in case you are considering to have your encounter from PNV, be ready to spend that much on permits. This fee goes across to all nationals including its own residents.
