Why you should visit Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda, surrounded by the tranquil waters of Lake Victoria, is home to orphaned chimps rescued from all around East Africa. The refuge is managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (Chimpanzee Trust), an NGO. We collaborate closely with the Ugandan government and wildlife authorities because we are deeply devoted to and active in both field conservation and community education.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda which was founded in 1997. It provides a home for over 40 orphaned chimps to live out their lives because reintroduction to their natural habitat is not possible, as well as educating visitors and local communities about their remarkable species and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda  is around 100 acres in size, 98 of which are wooded and divided from the visitor’s area by an electric fence through which the chimps walk throughout the day.

Chimpanzee Habituation at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Visitors will take either a morning or afternoon feeding of the chimpanzees from the visitors’ platform area along the sanctuary fence, listen to an informative talk by sanctuary staff, enjoy lunch (optional extra for $20 p/p on full day trips), swim on the equator, view a neighboring fishing village, bird watching, other wildlife encounters, or simply sunbathe and relax.

Meeting point: Entebbe, Banga Beach, where there is safe parking and a covered waiting area before departing from the jetty. Journey timings depend on lake conditions and are usually 60 minutes by speedboat or 90-120 minutes each trip by traditional propelled boat.

Morning viewing hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. 12.45pm-5.00pm: Afternoon viewing Travel duration is roughly 50-60 minutes each way, depending on the weather. The price includes round-trip boat transports and island admission taxes, subject to a minimum number of passengers on board and a residence type.

Morning viewing hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Afternoon viewing is available from 10.30am until 5.00pm. Travel duration is roughly 90-120 minutes each way, depending on the weather.

All passengers aboard our boats are furnished with life jackets and rain suits. Please keep in mind that the rates listed above are simply guidelines and are subject to change. They are only confirmed after reservations are confirmed.

Children under the age of five are free. Between the ages of 5 and 15, the price is half. Prices include round-trip boat transfers and island admission taxes, subject to a minimum number of passengers on board and residency type.

Be a Caregiver for a day at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

This is a one-of-a-kind event in which our guests get to experience a day in the life of a Chimpanzee Caregiver by becoming Caregivers themselves! As a chimp caretaker, you will have the thrilling chance to not only see the chimpanzees feeding, but also to participate in preparing and feeding their food. You can help the staff with any activities that are taking place at the sanctuary that day, such as medical check-ups, research and monitoring, preparing the holding areas for the chimpanzees, and administrative work, such as typing in the chimpanzee stories, and any other activities that your skills and experience can be used for.

This is a program designed to assist visitors understand and appreciate what it takes to care for our orphaned relatives on Ngamba Island, as well as to raise donations for their well-being. As a carer, you will have the opportunity to meet and engage with all of the chimpanzees on the island; however direct contact with them is not guaranteed but is possible under the watchful supervision of a resident Caregiver. Accommodation at Ngamba Island Sanctuary in Uganda.

Visitors doing chimpanzee habituation at Ngamba Island Sanctuary in Uganda can spend a night at the Island Sanctuary. Depending on the number of people going and the season, full board starts from $US 248- per person each night. Children aged 5-11 years had 50% of adult rates.

Boat transportation for overnight journeys starts from $US 150- per person return on scheduled boats, depending on the number of passengers and the season. Non-scheduled and private boats are available at an extra cost; please inquire for further information.
